Apple rumor twofer: Expose-like multitasking in iPhone OS 4.0, international iPad launch on April 24th

March 31, 2010 IT News No Comments

We’re not quite at the height of Apple frenzy, but looking at the bell curve, we’re only a standard deviation or two from its zenith (we imagine the fever pitch will be in tandem with Saturday’s iPad launch, if history and human nature tells us anything). Of course, that doesn’t stop the rumor mill from amping up production, and so on with the show! First on the docket, remember last month’s discovery of multitasking comments in the iPhone SDK 3.2 beta?

March 31, 2010 IT News No Comments

With Splinter Cell Conviction , Ubisoft wants to make you feel like a panther. Ars recently had the opportunity to preview the co-op campaign for the oft-delayed stealth action game at Toronto Comic Con this past weekend, and the consensus amongst the developers on hand was that they want to turn players into predators.

SecondBar puts your menu bar on a second monitor

March 31, 2010 Apple World No Comments

Filed under: Software The menu bar is a quintessential piece of the Mac “experience.” On the left, it shows all of the menu items for the currently active application; on the right, it shows icons from various menu bar application programs: the date/time, WiFi status, MobileMe sync status, and many, many more. The whole idea is to make the menu items easy to find and easy to “hit” with a mouse, by being connected to the top of the screen ( Fitts’s law and all that ).

User Ignorance Causes Cloud Security Leak; Accounts, Passwords Revealed

March 31, 2010 NET News No Comments

At 1:00 a.m. on Sunday morning I was doing routine maintenance on my personal Amazon Web Services account and instead found myself looking at something I had no right to be seeing: A database with 800,000 user accounts to the e-card site CardMaster.com . Along with that were the database passwords and back end of a major U.S

Reports of webOS 1.4.1 update now coming in

March 31, 2010 IT News No Comments

It doesn’t appear to do anything groundbreaking like overclock your Pre, but it looks like the webOS 1.4.1 update is now starting to trickle out to at least a few lucky users. According to PreCentral , one of the first reports to come in was from a Pre user who also happened to be one of the first to get the webOS 1.4 update while he was in Vietnam, and has now managed to snag the 1.4.1 update while residing in Holland. That was later followed up with a second report from a Sprint customer in Washington, but things seem to have been relatively quiet since them.

DayOne Ventures Brings Small Town Flavor to Startup Incubation

March 31, 2010 NET News No Comments

When you think of startup incubators, you think of the more well known organizations helping companies in cities like Boulder, San Francisco, New York or Austin, but one incubator is looking to change that assumption. Based at the VT KnowledgeWorks Business Acceleration Center in Blacksburg, VA, DayOne Ventures is a program aimed at tapping the talent coming from Virginia Tech to help local startups get off the ground. Sponsor With fewer than 40,000 residents, Blacksburg is less than half the size of startup hub Boulder, CO, but the city’s ties to Virginia Tech make it a fertile spot for its budding startup community.

IE9 demoed on Ion-based Eee PC with full GPU acceleration

March 31, 2010 IT News No Comments

Although we were a little more focused on Windows Phone 7 Series when we went to MIX 10, Microsoft’s other big announcement at the conference was Internet Explorer 9 , which offers HTML5 support and support for GPU acceleration throughout the browsing experience. We saw a few demos of the system in action at MIX, but this video from NVIDIA does a little better job showing how helpful that extra GPU boost can be — IE9 running on the Ion 2-based Eee PC 1201PN smokes a regular Atom-based netbook across a suite of tests

Not really a big surprise: iPhone multitasking to use “Expose-like” interface

March 31, 2010 Mobile News No Comments

We know iPhone OS 4 is in the pipes, and I imagine this little nugget of information is far from the only inklings we’ll have of new iPhone features over the next few months. Despite the extraordinary length of the Apple Insider article , there’s really only one piece of new information: the iPhone will be using an Expose-like interface to let you switch between apps, though due to scaling issues it is apparently only using the apps’ icons and not current screenshots. It’ll be triggered, they say, by quickly tapping the home button twice

Taking the bling out of diesel engines

March 31, 2010 IT News No Comments

While diesel engines are highly efficient, getting them cleaner and more environmentally friendly is currently pretty expensive. Most diesel aftertreatment systems currently require a platinum catalyst to eliminate nitrogen oxides, and that’s one of the reasons these vehicles continue to be more expensive than their gasoline counterparts. However, scientists have found that varieties of a doped mineral called perovskite work just as well, and sometimes better, than platinum.
