Amazon Kindle 3G gets AT&T-sponsored ad-supported option priced at $139

July 13, 2011 IT News Comments Off

Good news: now you can pick up an Amazon Kindle 3G for the same price as the Kindle WiFi. Naturally, there’s a catch here: ads, ads, ads — but you’ve gotten pretty good at tuning those things out anyway, right? The online retail giant announced today the availability of the Kindle 3G with Special Offers, priced at $139 (down from $189 for the ad-free version) — best of all, that price includes the 3G subscription, which won’t cost you a thing, if you’re willing to wade through “money saving offers” and some adtastic screensavers

Lenovo IdeaPad K1 up for Amazon pre-order, still toting $500 price tag

July 1, 2011 IT News Comments Off

The IdeaPad K1 is really living up to its name these days, existing merely as an idea and a visualized concept, but not a real deal purchasable commodity. That’s changing ever so slowly, however, with an appearance among Amazon’s pre-order inventory, where the Tegra 2 Android slate is accompanied by the $499.99 price tag we saw just over a week ago

Amazon said to be considering NFC-based mobile payment service

April 2, 2011 IT News Comments Off

As you may be aware, Amazon does actually already make it easier for you to shop at places other than Amazon.com with its Amazon Payments service, and it now looks like it might even be thinking about expanding things to brick and mortar stores as well. More specifically, Bloomberg is reporting that Amazon is exploring a mobile payment service based on NFC technology, which would let you pay for items and receive things like loyalty points using nothing other than an NFC-equipped cellphone.

How Amazon could loosen Google’s iron grip on Android

March 29, 2011 IT News Comments Off

The Amazon Appstore for Android launched last week . Although the online retail giant’s new software storefront still has some rough edges, it could eventually have significant ramifications for the entire Android ecosystem. If Amazon’s Appstore proves to be a viable alternative to Google’s own Android Market, it could weaken the search giant’s control over the Android platform and shift the balance of power in a direction that favors hardware makers—opening the door for forks and deeper differentiation

Amazon beats Apple, Google to music storage, streaming service

March 29, 2011 IT News Comments Off

There are plenty of cloud storage services to choose from, but there are few that are particularly good. Amazon hopes to become part of the latter group with the introduction of Amazon Cloud Drive , a consumer-oriented service that allows users to back up their local music libraries and play them remotely from anywhere via the Web or Android device. According to Amazon, all US-based Amazon customers automatically get 5GB of Cloud Drive space where they can upload their music libraries.

Is Amazon’s Cloud Locker Really an Innovation?

March 29, 2011 NET News Comments Off

Early today, Amazon launched a suite of music products that allow users to store their tracks online and them stream them over the Web or to any Android device courtesy of the Amazon MP3 mobile application. The launch has the tech world abuzz, not only because Amazon beat Apple and Google to the punch, both of whom are reportedly working on digital lockers of their own, but because Amazon hasn’t even received the record labels’ permission to host these tracks on its servers as of yet. But is Amazon’s cloud-based music storage service really all that innovative?
