HTC sales up nearly 88-percent from last year, analysts still skeptical on stock

July 4, 2011 IT News Comments Off

Despite having moved into the number five slot on IDC’s list of the top handset makers world wide — beating out RIM and just behind Apple — HTC has actually seen its share prices drop 19-percent since June 7th. The stock did rebound slightly following news that the company’s sales for June were a staggering 87.8-percent higher than the same time last year. Surprisingly, that’s actually a drop from May’s figures which were 116-percent higher than the same month in 2010

Ericsson to manage Clearwire’s 4G network as part of cost-cutting deal

May 19, 2011 IT News Comments Off

Now that Clearwire definitely isn’t producing its own smartphone, the company has apparently decided to focus its efforts on maintaining its WiMAX network — with the help of Ericsson. Yesterday, the 4G operator announced that it had struck a seven-year deal with the Swedish telecom firm, just a few months after fighting a brief trademark lawsuit filed by Sony Ericsson. Under the arrangement, Ericsson will assume all network engineering, operations, and maintenance responsibilities, allowing Clearwire to concentrate on cutting costs and increasing efficiency.

Dish Network takes over 500 Blockbuster locations for some reason

April 19, 2011 IT News Comments Off

Earlier this month, when Dish Network announced that it would be taking over Blockbuster ‘s remaining assets, we openly wondered about what the deal would mean for the thousands of (mostly) empty rental stores still scattered across the country. Shuttering all of them seemed like a very real possibility, but it now looks like Dish has plans for at least a few of Blockbuster’s old stomping grounds

Oracle: Itanium is dead. Intel: not by a long shot!

March 23, 2011 IT News Comments Off

In an odd development, Oracle has attempted to pre-announce the discontinuation of Intel’s Itanium line. In a statement today, the database maker announced that, “it has decided to discontinue all software development on the Intel Itanium microprocessor in response to Intel’s clear strategic direction to focus on their x86 microprocessor and with Itanium nearing the end of its life.” That Itanium is nearing the end of its life is a surprise, given that Intel just took the wraps off of its next major Itanium microarchitecture revision, codenamed Poulson, at this past ISSCC. And Intel itself has just released a statement denying that it has any plans to can Itanium.
