Kinect quadrocopter gets a new mission: 3D mapping (video)

April 1, 2011 IT News Comments Off

In the future, our flying robot overlords won’t just navigate terrain autonomously, they’ll also report back to base with detailed 3D maps of everything they’ve seen — or at least that’s what this homebuilt UAV does in a video released this week. In a nutshell, MIT’s combined its room-mapping Roomba with the Kinect quadrocopter radar developed at UC Berkeley, resulting in a flying contraption sure to be the envy of topographers everywhere. We’re not sure that the world’s robot incumbents will be too happy, though — perhaps MIT should invest in some laser protection next.

Surgical robot builds tiny paper airplane (video)

April 1, 2011 IT News Comments Off

Like killing elephants, paper airplane construction is a skill passed from father to son generation after generation — at least until the robots take over. Dr. James Porter knows this and has done us the service of putting together a video showing him manipulating a da Vinci surgical robot to deftly fold a tiny paper airplane

Logitec’s new wireless router is crazy-looking, crazy fast

March 31, 2011 IT News Comments Off

The new Logitec ( not Logitech ) LAN-WH450N/GR offers four Gigabit Ethernet ports, 802.11a/b/g/n wireless networking that maxes out at a theoretical 450Mbps , and just about the wildest router design we’ve yet seen. Yes, it’s justified by improved wireless throughput as a result of having three antennas sprouting out of the thin-bodied device, but who is Logitec trying to kid? It’s a futuristic, desktop-straddling robocopter and everyone at that company knows it

SmithBucklin distributes iPad 2s to employees

March 31, 2011 Apple World Comments Off

There was a time when if you saw an Apple product in a corporate environment you were either hanging out with the company’s designers or actually at Apple HQ itself. So it’s great to see companies not only using Apple gear but using it to incentivize and reward its staff like SmithBucklin , the world’s largest association management and professional services company, is doing. It’s giving its 600+ employees 32 GB Wi-Fi iPad 2s, plus $50 toward accessories “as a way to reward excellent staff performance, improve productivity and enhance the company’s social media capabilities,” according to the company

Samsung mass producing 22-inch transparent LCD, your desktop monitor seethes with jealousy

March 31, 2011 IT News Comments Off

They said they would do it, and by golly it’s nearly here — Samsung just revealed that its assembly lines are starting to churn out see-thru computer screens that don’t require power-sucking backlights to function. Unfortunately, it looks like the amazing AMOLED variety is still on the drawing board, but ambient light-powered LCDs are on the way, with Samsung offering a 22-inch, 1680 x 1050 resolution panel with a 500:1 contrast ratio to begin with. Sammy suggests we’ll see it in HDMI and USB-compatible monitors and suspects it’ll be used in advertising and teleconferencing first — which suggests this display won’t come cheap — but we all know the true killer app will be a nice big frameless laptop screen

March 31, 2011 Apple World Comments Off

The iFund has been pretty influential ever since it was announced a couple years ago — it’s a pool of money set up by Apple and a few other companies to support and grow companies that are contributing to the iOS ecosystem. Google to receive regular privacy audits following FTC ruling on Buzz

March 30, 2011 IT News Comments Off

Well, it looks like the spectre of Buzz will be looming large over Google for some time to come — the company has just reached an agreement with the FTC that will see it receive independent privacy audits every two years for the next twenty years following a ruling that found Google violated its own privacy policy with the service. In a blog post today, Google also says that it will now “ask users to give us affirmative consent” before it makes any changes in how it shares their personal information, and it adds that it would like to “apologize again for the mistakes we made with Buzz.” As for the FTC, chairman Jon Leibowitz describes the settlement as a “tough” one, and says simply that “when companies make privacy pledges, they need to honor them.” Google to receive regular privacy audits following FTC ruling on Buzz originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 30 Mar 2011 16:27:00 EDT. Pioneer’s SE-NC31C-K noise-cancelling earbuds are cheap, but are they effective?

March 29, 2011 IT News Comments Off

Active noise cancellation’s the secret sauce that keeps us counting sheep even when surrounded by the cacophony of crying babies and the dull roar of jet engines — though we often find the bulky form factor of those serenity-inducing cans unwieldy. Luckily for us, Pioneer has released its SE-NC31C-K noise-cancellation earbuds that promise to remove 90 percent of ambient noise at the flip of a switch on its AAA battery-powered in-line module — all for around a hundred bucks, which is a far more palatable price than its sound-suppressing brethren from Sennheiser ($320) and Sony ($415)

Motorola Xoom officially landing in UK next week, still has to finalize pricing and SKUs

March 29, 2011 IT News Comments Off

As much as we love our rumormongering, a good hard confirmation never goes astray around these parts, and we’ve just heard directly from Moto that its Xoom tablet will be arriving in the UK next week. When precisely, we don’t know, but the major electronics retailers will all be playing their part — Dixons (and its subsidiaries Currys and PC World) plus the Carphone Warehouse were specifically named.

Researchers manage 448Gbps on commercial hardware, coming soonish to a trunk near you

March 29, 2011 IT News Comments Off

We’ve seen many a theoretical demonstration of lightning-quick networks , but most use some rather special purpose hardware — like lasers and such that your average ISP doesn’t have hanging around. However, this new benchmark of 448Gbps is a little more impressive because it was achieved on commercial fiber hardware. A few teams of researchers were the ones shoveling the bits, including the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa, the National Inter-university Consortium for Telecommunications (CNIT), and good ‘ol Ericsson .

March 29, 2011 Apple World Comments Off

Several Verizon customers who tried to order an iPad 2 directly through the telco giant are still awaiting their shipments. Considering the worldwide shortage of iPad 2 units that might not sound like a big deal at first, until you hear the second half: many of these customers ordered the iPad 2 on its first day of availability and still haven’t received one

Analysts: Apple may have sold between 5-9 million iPads in Q2

March 29, 2011 Apple World Comments Off

The week after the iPad 2 went on sale, I kept expecting Apple to issue a press release announcing that they had sold a million iPad 2s within X number of days (Apple sold about two million of the first version in the first 60 days ). However, the first week passed and now, more than two weeks later, Apple has yet to announce any iPad 2 sales. This leads me to believe that Apple won’t be announcing any iPad 2 numbers until their next financial conference call later in April
