March 29, 2011 IT News Comments Off

Several rumors popped up this week suggesting that Apple might push the release of both the next iPhone hardware and the next major iOS update from its usual summer release to the fall . In the wake of those rumors, which claim the announcement will coincide with a new cloud-based iTunes “locker,” it’s possible that Apple may use the extra time to integrate newer technologies, including Siri’s AI-based, voice-controlled searching, improved mapping, and possibly LTE compatibility into next-generation iOS and iPhone hardware. So far, it appears that Apple will end up focusing on Mac OS X Lion and updated cloud-based services which are said to integrate with Lion during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in early June

Google Realtime Search Manager Leaves to Build Foursquare as Platform

March 25, 2011 NET News Comments Off

Akshay Patil became a software engineer at Google almost seven years ago. Now the product manager for Google Realtime , the Google tool to search Tweets and other real-time updates from around the Web, Patil announced this morning that he’s leaving Google to become the new Platform Evangelist for location-based social network Foursquare . That’s a huge coup for Foursquare and a sign the startup will likely put a major new focus on working with outside companies and services to build on top of the set of check-ins and tips it’s amassing about venues around the world, people who patronize them and their interests.

March 13, 2011 NET News Comments Off

With SXSW well under way in Austin, Texas, the servers behind apps like Beluga , GroupMe , Kik and FastSociety must be working overtime. After all, people like talking to their friends, right? Foursquare tries out an NFC-based check-in system at its HQ

March 12, 2011 IT News Comments Off

There’s not exactly a lot of details on this one, but Business Insider discovered something of a surprise while touring Foursquare’s New York headquarters for launch of Foursquare 3.0. It turns out that the company is already testing out an NFC -based check-in system at its HQ, which lets those with a suitable phone (such as a Nexus S) share their location simply by tapping it against a blue dot on the wall. Unfortunately, there’s no indications on any plans to actually expand it beyond its own HQ, although you can bet that it’s pretty high up on the list of inevitable things or the company.

iPad 2 first impressions: Steve Sande

March 12, 2011 Apple World Comments Off

For those of you who were watching at 7 PM ET today as I was livestreaming the iPad 2 line and purchase process at the Aspen Grove Apple Store in Littleton, Colorado, I ended up buying a 32 GB white iPad 2 with AT&T 3G. The lines at Aspen Grove were longer for the iPad 2 than for probably any Apple launch I’ve seen at this location. I’d estimate that by the time 5 PM rolled around, there were 400 – 450 people in line
