Insert Coin: Air Guitar Move for iPhone (video)

June 18, 2011 IT News Comments Off

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you’d like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with “Insert Coin” as the subject line. We’re not sure proper air guitarists would ever consider adding a bonafide pick to their cherished imaginary pastime, but what if a petite plastic plectrum could turn those strokes into stringed acoustics that more than just you can hear?

Spotify signs UMG, only Warner stands in the way of US invasion?

June 12, 2011 IT News Comments Off

Six months ago, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek couldn’t tell us when his subscription streaming music service might launch in the United States, and that won’t change today, but apparently there’s not much left keeping $10 unlimited monthly music away. All Things D reports that Spotify has signed Universal Music Group to a US distribution deal, the third of the four largest labels to agree, and anonymous sources say the last remaining holdout, Warner Music, may also soon cave. Mind you, one of Spotify’s most intriguing new features just got shown up by iTunes in the Cloud , but when it comes to extra competition and consumer choice, we won’t look a gift horse in the mouth.

May 17, 2011 IT News Comments Off

Internet radio provider Slacker is bulldozing the thin line dividing itself from subscription-based music services today, with the launch of Radio Plus. The new pricing tier joins the existing gratis Basic Radio and ad-free Premium Radio plans, adding an all-you-can-eat music model akin to services like Rhapsody and Rdio . Subscribers who shell out $9.99 a month receive all of the features of the $4.99 Premium Radio users, plus unlimited access to eight million songs, letting them listen to what they want, when the want, and generally play god with the site’s existing radio services

Google Music Beta versus the titans of the streaming music space: a chart

May 10, 2011 IT News Comments Off

It feels like just yesterday we charted the streaming music landscape , but it’s already changed in a big way — Google is muscling in on the likes of Rhapsody, Pandora and particularly Amazon with its Google Music Beta . Being able to take 20,000 of your personal tunes, stream them over the web and cache them locally on your device isn’t functionality to sneeze at, so it’s time we updated our charts.

Otomata sequencer creates generative music for the melodically challenged (video)

April 19, 2011 IT News Comments Off

It won’t bring you the success or adoration that Brian Eno’s enjoyed, but the Otomata sequencer could have you making noise like the Roxy Music alum in seconds. Way back in 1996, Eno espoused the idea of generative music, which is a non-repetitive form of music created, in this case, anyway, by a piece of software.

Novation Twitch touchstrip DJ controller makes the scene at Musik Messe 2011 (video)

April 8, 2011 IT News Comments Off

We’re not professional musicians by a long shot, but when we do get a chance to break away from the relentless torrent of cellphones and tablets, nothing quite hits the spot like a little music appreciation. Of course, when done Engadget-style this usually means a gadget of some sort — and we’d be lying if we didn’t say that Novation’s newest didn’t whet our appetites for some after-hours beatmatching.

Is Amazon’s Cloud Locker Really an Innovation?

March 29, 2011 NET News Comments Off

Early today, Amazon launched a suite of music products that allow users to store their tracks online and them stream them over the Web or to any Android device courtesy of the Amazon MP3 mobile application. The launch has the tech world abuzz, not only because Amazon beat Apple and Google to the punch, both of whom are reportedly working on digital lockers of their own, but because Amazon hasn’t even received the record labels’ permission to host these tracks on its servers as of yet. But is Amazon’s cloud-based music storage service really all that innovative?

"Psycho-acoustic" Beatles recordings cost BlueBeat $950,000

March 28, 2011 IT News Comments Off

BlueBeat.com , the company that tried to sell “remastered” Beatles tracks online before they became officially available, has agreed to pay nearly $1 million to settle a lawsuit filed by three music labels. The move comes more than a year after a federal judge issued a restraining order and then an injunction against the company, and does not yet include any attorney’s fees or other damages involved in the lawsuit. The case dates back to 2009, before the (now infamous) Beatles remasters were actually authorized to be sold online.
