HP ships $50 WiFi Mobile Mouse, gives your Bluetooth radio a break

June 17, 2011 IT News Comments Off

If you’ve been waiting oh-so-patiently for HP’s $49.99 WiFi Mobile Mouse to ship, take heart — the aforesaid critter is now ready to free up one more valuable USB port at your workstation . As mentioned before, this ain’t your mum’s wireless mouse, as it makes use of WiFi technology (you know, instead of the tried-and-true Bluetooth) similar to that found in Logitech’s Unifying Receiver . In other words, this bad boy doesn’t require anything other than itself to connect

June 1, 2011 IT News Comments Off

The HomePlug Powerline Alliance already wants to tether your entire household to the Internet, and it may soon extend its reach to your garage, as well. At Computex today, the company announced that Audi, BMW, Daimler, Porsche and Volkswagen have all agreed to support its HomePlug Green PHY (GP) technology as their EV charging interface of choice. The networking specification would allow electric car owners to link their plug-ins to the Smart Grid via the same ports used to charge their batteries, opening up new, Powerline-based possibilities

Latest Boxee Box update leaves surround sound speakers silent on stereo sources

May 15, 2011 IT News Comments Off

It wasn’t long after the Boxee Box v1.1 update started to roll out that users with surround sound systems found a major issue with it: besides the removal of volume controls (confirmed to return as an optional setting in the next update), there was an undocumented change to the way it handled stereo PCM audio sources for users with surround sound systems.

HP EliteBook 2760p tours the FCC, shows up online starting at $1,499

May 8, 2011 IT News Comments Off

HP isn’t really trying to keep its 12.1-inch EliteBook 2760p convertible tablet a secret these days, but honestly it might not matter even if the company tried — the ever-reliable FCC made plenty of pictures and documentation available in a filing by Sierra Wireless. That’s the company that supplies the Qualcomm Gobi3000 dual-mode GSM / CDMA radio in this tablet, you see, which should be an attractive option for business travelers — though we don’t see any mention of it in the first three Elitebook 2760p models confirmed on HP’s website.

Looks like Gigabyte’s S1080 tablet, which landed in Taiwan earlier this month, is getting ready to hit shelves here in the US. The 10.1-inch Windows 7 slate stopped by the FCC, where it got cracked open and had its silicon-packed innards exposed for the camera.

McTiVia networked streamer slinging PC content to TV screens this May

April 16, 2011 IT News Comments Off

It’s not exactly a minty fresh concept , but if you’re bored with networked media streamers slinging content and content alone, Awind’s McTiVia might just be the nugget of unconventional that you’ve been after. For all intents and purposes, this is a souped-up wireless router that pipes all content from your Mac or PC onto your HDMI-equipped HDTV. The goal

Cisco goes minimalistic with new Linksys E-Series routers and switches

April 5, 2011 IT News Comments Off

If you dig the stylish look on the Linksys E4200 802.11n router but prefer something more wallet-friendly, then Cisco’s latest range of home routers and switches will likely suit your taste. Gone are the curved grooves and blinking LEDs on the top, but these routers — ranging from $59.99 to $159.99 — still go about their usual wireless business at up to 300Mbps, with additional simultaneous dual-band support on the pricier E2500 and E3200

So What Will A T-Mobile / AT&T Network Look Like?

March 31, 2011 Mobile News Comments Off

Let’s put aside rumors of AT&T having to divest parts of the T-Mobile network in order to receive FCC and DOJ approval as we look at what the two conjoined networks could look like. Fierce Mobile acquired some images courtesy of American Roamer, an “independent source of wireless carrier network coverage and spectrum information” has gone and done just that. In this block of pretty pictures of the US wireless market, you’ll see both the current coverage and spectrum holdings of both companies as well as what the company could look like when a deal is signed, sealed and delivered.

Researchers manage 448Gbps on commercial hardware, coming soonish to a trunk near you

March 29, 2011 IT News Comments Off

We’ve seen many a theoretical demonstration of lightning-quick networks , but most use some rather special purpose hardware — like lasers and such that your average ISP doesn’t have hanging around. However, this new benchmark of 448Gbps is a little more impressive because it was achieved on commercial fiber hardware. A few teams of researchers were the ones shoveling the bits, including the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa, the National Inter-university Consortium for Telecommunications (CNIT), and good ‘ol Ericsson .
