Windows Phone ‘Mango’ search offers location-specific results, app integration (video)

May 24, 2011 IT News Comments Off

Windows Phone’s latest iteration (codename Mango ) is all about keeping it in the hood. We had a chance to sit down with a Windows Phone rep before today’s big reveal , and they let us in on a couple of new features that will most definitely set the OS apart — at least when it comes to navigating the tangled web that is the internet. We did get a quick glimpse at IE9 , but the new browser isn’t much of a game changer — it supports HTML5, but still won’t deliver Flash or Silverlight compatibility

Meizu MX to be Jack Wong’s next dream phone, coming with HDMI-out by year’s end

April 18, 2011 IT News Comments Off

It’s only been 109 days since Meizu’s remarkable launch of the M9 Android, but as we all know, there’s nothing stopping our man Jack Wong from teasing his next flagship phone on his forum. Previously known as the M9II , Wong has now renamed this 4-inch handset to MX — apparently short for “meng xiang” or “dream” in Mandarin Chinese, though X can also cunningly double up as the Roman numeral for 10 here.

MetroPCS lays the TapouT smackdown on Huawei’s Ascend… gently

March 30, 2011 IT News Comments Off

Is it really, truly possible to market a Froyo-based smartphone — let alone one from 2010 — to a demographic obsessed with Cauliflower ear? MetroPCS seems to think so, and its version of the Huawei Ascend just so happens to be “sanctioned” by TapouT. Hailed as the first brand to represent MMA, TapouT’s roots are plastered all about the innards of the phone, with this Special Edition handset shipping with ten virtual training center videos, a dozen static wallpapers, six live wallpapers and a host of presumably violent Android applications

Wysips wants to turn your phone’s display into a solar cell (hands-on with video)

March 24, 2011 IT News Comments Off

We chatted with a fascinating French startup by the name of Wysips here at CTIA today that’s showing off transparent photovoltaic film — in other words, it generates power from light… and you can see right through it . It’s the only such film in the world, apparently — and though you can probably imagine a host of possible applications for something like that, turning the entire surface of a touchscreen smartphone into a self-sufficient, solar-powered beast is clearly high on the list.
