July 8, 2011 IT News Comments Off

BW, LON is our new favorite abbreviation. In addition to kind of looking like something you’d type into a graphing calculator, it also means means big week, lots of news: in the hardware department, we’ve got reviews of HP’s latest tactile offering and a hazy outlook on Apple’s next communications device. Software’s riding out another week of Google+ and finding out what it’s like to be more video-centric on facebook

Marshall updates Major headphone with in-line mic for more talkin’ between rockin’

June 20, 2011 IT News Comments Off

Marshall struck solid gold when it lent spare amp parts to Zound Industries ( Urbanears ) for the Major and Minor headphones, and is now releasing a remixed version of the original smash hit. The updated headset is by all means a Major headphone, but it now features an in-line remote with a mic that’s sure to please on-the-move fans of the supra-aural fit. At $119, the new cans will set you back about 20 bones more than the original, although you can’t put a price on the amount of rockstar-cred you’ll gain.

DARPA setting up a $130 million ‘virtual firing range’ to help battle cyber attacks

June 20, 2011 IT News Comments Off

The US government is serious about online security, just ask any one of its cyber commandos . Adding to its arsenal for battling the big bad hackers, Reuters reports that DARPA is working on a National Cyber Range, which would act a standalone internet simulation engine where digital warriors can be trained and experimental ideas tested out. Lockheed Martin and Johns Hopkins University are competing to provide the final system, with one of them expected to soon get the go-ahead for a one-year trial, which, if all goes well, will be followed by DARPA unleashing its techies upon the virtual firing range in earnest next year.

Scientists restore memory of drugged rats, hope to do the same with people

June 20, 2011 IT News Comments Off

Is there anything we can’t learn from drugged up rats? Researchers at Wake Forest University and the University of Southern California used a group of medicated rodents to demonstrate a method by which memory can be restored with the flick of a switch. The rats were outfitted with tiny, rat-sized electrodes and exposed to pharmacological substances, which caused them to forget the connection between pushing a lever and getting water

Dutch coins feature QR codes, promise ‘surprises’

June 18, 2011 IT News Comments Off

Governments cram all manner of bizarre imagery onto the back of currency, so really, what’s a few little QR codes between treasury departments? And heck, who are we to suggest that these new coins from the Royal Dutch Mint aren’t the beginning of a larger barcoded money trend? The mint is celebrating its centennial with two new QR-packing coins, a silver €5 and gold €10

June 18, 2011 IT News Comments Off

Verizon said otherwise earlier this week , but Motorola has now finally chimed in to say that a Gingerbread update for the Droid 2 Global is not, in fact, rolling out at the moment — as Droid 2 Global owners have probably noticed.

Alleged shot of Sony Ericsson Xperia Duo surfaces

June 17, 2011 IT News Comments Off

There’s not really much more than the image above to go on with this one, but what you’re looking at is purported to be the as-yet-unannounced Xperia Duo, which may or may not be Sony Ericsson’s first dual-core phone. As you can see, it bears some resemblance to the Xperia Arc , with what appears to be a large, edge-to-edge display and a UI that’s apparently been tweaked a bit from what we’ve seen previously on SE phones, including a different weather widget and media player controls under the dock.

Motorola’s WiFi Xoom gains access to Google Movies, just in time for the weekend

June 17, 2011 IT News Comments Off

Hard to say why Google chose to roll its Movies app out first to 3G-packed tablets sporting Android 3.1 (a smaller testbed, perhaps?), but it looks as if it won’t matter for much longer. We’ve received a number of tips this evening suggesting that Google Movies can now be downloaded from the Android Market by WiFi-only Xoom tablets, though some are seeing a litany of server errors when trying to actually use the service. That said, we didn’t see any issues here at Engadget HQ, so it’s possible that a few kinks are still being worked out on select servers

Sony Ericsson signs deal with NFC chip maker, gets ready to do the Xperia pay

June 17, 2011 IT News Comments Off

If Google ever hopes to lead the mass exodus away from credit card transactions with Google Wallet, a lot more NFC-packing handsets will need to hit the market. Thus far Sony Ericsson hasn’t exactly led the near-field charge, aside Japan’s Xperia Acro , but it looks like that may soon change, thanks to a deal struck between the phone maker and semiconductor producer, NXP, which will bring the company’s PN65 to future Android-based Xperia models. Wave your phone after the break to check out the official announcement

California stops automatic phone book delivery following pressure from Verizon

June 16, 2011 IT News Comments Off

We’ve long known paper books are on the decline , but now we’re seeing the first death knell for the fattest of them all. California’s public utilities commission has ruled that it will no longer deliver doorstops residential phone books unless folks specifically ask for it — a move that’s expected to prevent 1,870 tons of material from entering the state’s waste stream. Californians, like everyone else, can search the White Pages online, but they’ll still be able to request a paper copy or CD-ROM if they’re feeling old-fashioned.

DIY Virtual Boy arcade cabinet costs only a headache to play

June 15, 2011 IT News Comments Off

As you may have noticed, we have a bit of a soft spot for Nintendo’s other 3D device, the Virtual Boy — despite its many, many flaws. So, it seems, does DIYer Tighe Lory, who liked the oddball console so much that he built an full-size arcade cabinet for it. As you can see above, that comes complete with some custom joysticks that replace the Virtual Boy’s controller, along with a sliding mechanism that lets you adjust the Virtual Boy itself to just the right height instead of forcing you to hunch over a table.
