Hotmail adds ‘My friend’s been hacked!’ feature to finger phishers

July 16, 2011 IT News Comments Off

Hotmail’s spent the past few years playing catch up with the competition, but for the most part, it hasn’t done anything particularly groundbreaking with its services. Earth shattering might not be the appropriate descriptor for its latest addition, but Hotmail’s added a helpful new feature to distinguish plain old spam from the kind that comes form a trusted source.

May 20, 2011 IT News Comments Off

Google confirms Android security issue, server-side fix rolling out today

May 18, 2011 IT News Comments Off

No Android security flaw is good news for Google, but the recently discovered ClientLogin issue that left the OS vulnerable to impersonation attacks is surely at least a bit more welcome than some of the alternatives. That’s because the flaw can be fixed at the server-side level (rather than on millions of Android phones), and Google has now confirmed that a fix is rolling out today, although it may take a few more days for it to cover all users (there’s no action required on your part)

Sprint / Google Voice integration now available for discounted accounts, still AWOL in sunny Puerto Rico

May 12, 2011 IT News Comments Off

We’ve been keeping a close eye on Sprint’s Google Voice integration since its troubled release last month, and Sprint has confirmed that many more of you are now able to activate the feature. Previously, individual customers with discounted accounts were being grouped with corporate and government enterprise customers, but it appears that the issue has been resolved (though corporate and government accounts are still unable to activate). However, Sprint confirmed that readers in Puerto Rico remain unable to activate regardless of their account status, and was unable to provide as estimate as to when integration will be available there

The iPhone tracking fiasco and what you can do about it

April 21, 2011 IT News Comments Off

By now you’ve no doubt heard about a certain iOS database file called consolidated.db . It made quite a splash yesterday when a pair of researchers, Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden, from O’Reilly Media announced the “iPhone tracking software” the duo had “discovered hidden on the phones.” Here’s the problem: they didn’t discover it, at least not originally. The file, known to hold large amounts of geolocation data collected from WiFi access points and cell-towers, has been probed by forensic experts ever since the retail launch of the iPhone 4 back in June of 2010

Skype for Android update adds US 3G calling, fixes personal data hole

April 20, 2011 IT News Comments Off

Verizon Android users have had 3G Skype calling since this time last year , but the latest app release — v1.0.0.983 for those of you keeping tabs — brings 3G calling to the masses, without the need for a VZW-sanctioned app. The update also patches a rather significant security hole discovered last week , which could let third-party apps get hold of your personal information. We’re glad to see that’s no longer the case, and who’s going to object to free calling as part of the deal as well

UAE plans enterprise-class messaging ban for individuals and small companies?

April 18, 2011 IT News Comments Off

Seems the United Arab Emirates wasn’t satisfied with the spying agreements that RIM put in place — now, the government’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority will reportedly restrict BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) services to companies with more than twenty BlackBerry accounts each. Interestingly, the TRA itself denies that any services will be halted to individuals or small firms, even as RIM itself claims that such a ban will indeed take effect, though RIM also claims that it “would be an industrywide policy applying equally to all enterprise solution providers,” happily suggesting that competitors would also be affected

Samsung laptop keylogger almost certainly a false positive

March 31, 2011 IT News Comments Off

Mohamed Hassan had just installed anti-malware software on his new Samsung laptop when, much to his surprise, the software alerted him to the presence of a keystroke logger. A brand-new machine, and it was apparently already recording every password and username he typed. He returned the computer for an unrelated reason, and bought a second Samsung laptop to replace it
