Microsoft beats Wii, PS3 in sales thanks to new Xbox 360

July 16, 2010 IT News No Comments

It’s NPD time again, and for the month of June there was very little in the way of surprises for video game hardware and software sales. Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption continues to be a big seller, while the Wii dominates the top 10 list and the Xbox 360 sees a big boost. Let’s take a look at the numbers.

Elgato debuts Turbo.264 HD Software Edition, cuts price of hardware edition

July 15, 2010 IT News No Comments

Here at Engadget HQ, there’s hardly a more overused piece of equipment than Elgato’s (Mac only) Turbo.264 HD — in our experience, it chews through bloated video files at a breakneck pace, leaving us with shrunken versions of CES hands-on and the like without any noticeable degradation in quality. Now, that same functionality is being introduced sans an easy-to-forget USB dongle as the Turbo.264 HD Software Edition. For all intents and purposes, the SE version does the exact same thing as the original, albeit at a presumably slower pace

PocketMoney for iPad Review

July 15, 2010 Apple World No Comments

PocketMoney is probably one of the few apps to boast origins on the Apple Newton, but this digital dollar tracker is a useful pick for those looking to stay on top of their budgets and expenses on the go. Unlike automated services like Mint.com that automatically track transactions, PocketMoney is a strictly manual affair, meaning you’ll need to plug in your accounts and keep up with deposits and withdrawals, as well as other fees and expenses. Think of it as a smart notebook — PocketMoney can store thousands of transactions, lets you transfer funds between stored accounts, and can be customized with dozens of included icons to differentiate various accounts and expenses.

Windows 7 SP1 public beta now ready for download

July 14, 2010 IT News No Comments

Slightly ahead of schedule , Microsoft has dished out Service Pack numero uno for Windows 7. The hot-selling OS has been a revelation since its release and it’s therefore no surprise that this update pack does nothing remarkably new or important. It collates all of Microsoft’s patches since launch into a neat little (well, not really, it’s 1.2GB in size) package and throws in a few other hotfixes to boot.

StockWatch – iPad Edition Review

July 12, 2010 Apple World No Comments

Unlike some of the other stock market apps available on iPad, StockWatch isn’t free — but what you’re paying for is slightly more in-depth portfolio monitoring, an easy to use and solidly attractive interface, and the ability to sync your data between multiple iPads or iPhones. StockWatch allows stock market traders the ability to keep track of an unlimited number of stocks, mutual funds, commodities, and more, and create multiple portfolios to follow your various investments. New lots of any stock or other investment can be easily added to your portfolio, as StockWatch is able to track the date, amount, and commission, and report on how well the investment has performed since purchase or sale

Three Options To Navigate UP In Windows Explorer

July 12, 2010 IT News No Comments

I just finished reading a guide over at Freeware Genius explaining how to add an UP button to Windows Explorer in Windows Vista and Windows 7, to bring back the Windows XP functionality to those operating systems. The UP button was used in Windows XP to provide the user with an option to display the contents of the parent folder. Microsoft has removed the UP button and replaced it with a breadcrumb structure in the Explorer address bar since then

Google Open Spot alerts Android users to freed parking spaces

July 11, 2010 IT News No Comments

Oh, sure — this has certainly been tried before , but given that things like this need a critical mass of followers to be effective, we’re particularly jazzed about Google ‘s own initiative. Dubbed ‘Open Spot,’ this bloody brilliant Android (2.0 and up) application enables motorists to search for unclaimed spaces that have been reported by other Open Spot users, and once they head elsewhere, it allows them to mark their spot as open and available
