Andy Lees says no to Mango on Windows tablets

Microsoft’s Andy Lees quashed dreams of Windows tablets running a Mango-style OS during a talk at the company’s Worldwide Partners Conference today, saying the mobile operating system would conflict with the outfit’s ideas of what makes a slate. According to Electronista , Lees said the computing giant sees tablets as PCs, making the mobile OS incompatible with its vision. He went on to say that Windows 8′s networking and printing functions make it more suited to the needs of tablet users.

It’s looking like there’s a little shuffling happening at HP in the wake of the TouchPad ‘s release — and somewhat less than flattering reception. The company has announced that Stephen DeWitt will be taking the lead in the company’s webOS global business unit, while Jon Rubinstein will be taking over as Senior Vice President of Global Innovation for HP’s Personal Systems Group — a group DeWitt previously helmed.

Zinio’s smartphone and tablet apps make it easy to bring a lifetime’s worth of magazine content with you on the go, but performance has been inconsistent, especially when navigating through pages or zooming into photos and text. The company’s latest app improves upon both critical elements, however, taking advantage of the Nvidia Tegra chip in your Mototola Xoom or Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 to smooth out page transitions and pinch-to-zoom. We caught a brief glimpse of Archos’ new Arnova 7 tablet when it hit the FCC last week and now, we have a few more details on the company’s affordable Android-based slate. Though there’s no information on its RAM or processing capacity, the latest addition to the Arnova clan boasts a seven-inch, resistive touchscreen LCD with 800×480 resolution, supports 720p HD playback, and offers 4GB of flash memory

Motorola Xooms in Android 3.1 update that activates microSD card support outside the US

You know that microSD card slot that’s been laying dormant in your Motorola Xoom ? Provided you don’t reside in the US, that’ll be getting activated soon as part of the tablet’s Android 3.1 update, which is starting to roll out now and should have all of Europe covered within the next few weeks. Motorola explicitly identifies this as a firmware update for “non-US” Xooms, so Canadians would be well advised to check their software update utility, though the big question is why didn’t the American 3.1 update include microSD support as well?

Way back in January at CES, we managed to sneak in a little bit of hands-on time with the Vizio tablet, the TV manufacturer’s straightforwardly-named foray into the ever-popular space. Archos Arnova 7 hits the FCC, brings new hope to penny-pinching tablet enthusiasts

For those who like their Android tablets cheap, it looks like Archos is ready to unleash yet another budget-friendly addition to the Arnova family stateside. The Arnova 7 slate has just graced the FCC, accompanied by the requisite confidentiality requests, which means we won’t get any real-deal shots of the thing, nor a full list of specs, but we did get a rather nice sketch of the WiFi tablet via the good old label-placement diagram. If that outline’s got you all worked up, the Arnova 7′s already received some pricing and spec details overseas, rocking a €99 price tag, 800×480-pixel display, and Android 2.2.

Toshiba Thrive pre-order now live, starts at $430 and ends up in your hands in mid-July

As promised , Toshiba is marking June 13th with pre-order availability of its Thrive Android ( 3.1 !) tablet, a device whose life aspiration and name happen to coincide perfectly. This 10-inch Tegra 2 portable has the usual 1280 x 800 resolution, dual cameras (5 megapixel on the back, 2 megapixel up front), a gigabyte of RAM, and a 23WHr battery, but it also brings nice expandability with full-size HDMI, USB 2.0 and SD card slots. The Easy Grip back covers can be swapped — which, yes, means you can also replace the battery — though you’ll have to splash out $20 for any non-black hues

HTC Flyer drops by the FCC again, this time with T-Mobile friendly GSM bands

The WiFi-only HTC Flyer tablet touched down last month without a peep from Carly and pals, but those magenta-tinted marketing plans are looking far more likely now — a GSM-based Flyer just hit the FCC with support for T-Mobile’s 3G bands. Visually and functionally, it looks like the same savory slate we saw tested in April , except with the all-important 1700MHz frequency commonly used by T-Mobile for HSPA cellular data. There’s still no word on pricing or availability, but we’ve heard Sprint’s EVO View 4G variant pegged for June 24th , and rumor has it that T-Mobile could release the Flyer on the sixth of next month

BlackBerry PlayBook rolling out internationally over the next month

Here in the US and Canada, we’re already worrying about things like recalls , while the rest of world is still waiting for its crack at the original BlackBerry PlayBook . RIM today announced that its enterprise-friendly tablet will be hitting 16 more markets over the next 30 days — though some of the locations, like the UK , have already been announced (you guys will be getting the thing in a mere six days).
