We’re now a year into the iPad era and some of those news apps have dramatically changed how we consume news. But it hasn’t been the apps from traditional news media.

A Legacy Lives On: T-Mobile Sidekick Reborn As The Android-Powered Sidekick 4G

March 15, 2011 Mobile News Comments Off

Call me a nerd, or call me nostalgic — but I loved the Sidekick series. Though that love fizzled over time (partially due to hardware issues in the later Sidekicks, partially due to the fact that smartphone prices plummeted while their user-friendliness skyrocketed), the first three Sidekicks are still some of my favorite devices ever. Today, just two weeks after T-Mobile and Microsoft announced that they’re pulling the plug on the old Sidekick cloud servers , T-Mobile is officially unveiling something they (and I) hope can bring life back to the Sidekick series: the Android-powered, Samsung-made Sidekick 4G

Twitter tells third-party devs to stop making Twitter client apps

March 12, 2011 IT News Comments Off

In a statement issued today by Twitter on its official developer mailing list, the company informed third-party developers that they should no longer attempt to build conventional Twitter client applications. In a move to increase the “consistency” of the user experience, Twitter wants more control over how its service is presented to users in all contexts. The announcement is a major blow to the third-party application developers who played a key role in popularizing Twitter’s service.

Forum user gets banned, loses access to Dragon Age II

March 11, 2011 IT News Comments Off

When it comes to EA games, you really should watch what you say. That’s what one BioWare forum-goer learned after possibly being banned by asking BioWare, an EA studio, “Have you sold your souls to the EA devil?” The comment resulted in a temporary 72 hour ban, but more importantly meant that the user couldn’t play a brand-new copy of Dragon Age II during that time. “I just got my Bioware Signature Edition [of Dragon Age II ] from the store,” the user wrote on BioWare’s forums

March 9, 2011 Apple World Comments Off

So you think you’re a Twitter Jedi master? While you may have mastered the dark art of the retweet and even decrypted the meaning of hashtags, there are still a few tricks and tips that even pro Twitter users may not be aware of. While many of us have eschewed the Twitter website in favor of the official mobile app on the platform of your choice (or one of the many excellent third-party apps), Twitter.com is perhaps one of the best ways for users to take advantage of the company’s many shortcuts and tricks

Apigee-to-Go: Extending the Console Metaphor and the Concept of the Social Object

March 4, 2011 NET News Comments Off

Apigee is extending its console to be integrated into a provider’s Web framework. SoundCloud, PayPal and LinkedIn have been the first to integrate the Apigee service that lets developers explore an API from within the providers development environment and share it as a social object. Apigee-to-Go is an iFrame of the Apigee console that embeds into the provider’s CSS, allowing the site to be skinned and in the process make the experience transparent to the user.

Mozilla Makes A Better Case for Web Apps in Minutes Than Google Did in Months

March 4, 2011 NET News Comments Off

When Google first introduced Chrome OS and the idea of “Web apps” last December, the idea made little sense to me. Then, over time, as I became used to it and started playing around with their prototype CR-48 unit, which runs the browser-based operating system, it began to make more and more sense. But still, there was something missing.
